Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Albert B.L Lawson was born in Longford, Tasmania, the son of Albert and Wilhelmina Lawson. His father died in 1905 and his widowed mother lived in Launceston, Tasmania. Albert was married to Mary and was the father of three boys when he enlisted. He was working as a farm manager on a property called “The Limes” near Patho, Victoria. He went missing near Passchendaele on 12 October 1917.

His wife, Mary, stated on his Roll of Honour form that, his brother, 1606 Pte. Oscar Lawson 18th Battalion AIF, died of wounds in Malta during 1915. Another brother, Harry Lawson, returned home in 1919.

The Launceston Examiner printed the following article on 1 December 1917.

“News was received yesterday that Private Albert B. L. Lawson, eldest son of Mrs. W.V. Lawson, 30 Galvin Street, Launceston, had been killed in action in France. The deceased soldier, who was 34 years of age, enlisted two years ago in Victoria, where he was managing "The Limes" estate at Echuca. This is the second son of Mrs. Lawson to make the supreme sacrifice. Oscar was killed at Gallipoli in 1915. There is also another son, who has been serving for three years at the front. Private Lawson leaves a wife and three children to mourn their lose.”

Sadly, Albert’s youngest son, VX43808 Pte. Kenneth Francis Lawson 2/21st Australian Infantry Battalion, died of illness as a prisoner of war on 13 July 1945, after being captured at Ambon during 1942. He was 34 years of age, the same age his father reached.
