Died on this date – 19th March…… Percy Francis Connelly was born at Goulburn, New South Wales in 1892.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 2nd November, 1916 at Mackay, Queensland as a 24 year old, single, Labourer from Bangalow, Richmond River, NSW.

Private Percy Francis Connelly, Service number 3144, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on HMAT Demosthenes (A64) on 23rd December, 1916 with the 49th Infantry Battalion, 8th Reinforcements & disembarked at Plymouth, England on 3rd March, 1917.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. These were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.

On 4th March, 1917 Private Connelly was marched in to 13th Training Battalion at Codford, Wiltshire from Australia. He was admitted sick to New Zealand Hospital on 15th March, 1917 (date as per Casualty Form – Active Service, however the Statement of Service form recorded he was admitted on 13th March, 1917)

Private Percy Francis Connelly died at 4.10 a.m. on 19th March, 1917 at No. 3 New Zealand Military Hospital, Codford, Wiltshire of Broncho-Pneumonia.

He was buried in St. Mary’s New Churchyard, Codford, Wiltshire, England where 31 Australian WW1 War Graves & 66 WW1 New Zealand Graves are located.
