John left Australia on 11 January 1916 bound for Egypt. He fought at Tel-el Kebir until he was sent to Marsailles, France from Alexandria on the Arcadian on 5 June. John had transferred to the 50th Battalion on 26 February and on 14 August was wounded in action suffering shellshock. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 4 April 1917. John was mentioned in Despatches on 31 December 1918 and featured in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette No. 61 of 23 May 1919. He returned to Australia on the City of Exeter on 12 July 1919 and was discharged on 14 October.
