Arthur Stansfield was one of five sons of James Thomas and Marion Stansfield, of Franklin, Tasmania, who served Australia during WW1. His younger brother, 2950 Pte. Stanley Robert Stansfield 52nd Battalion AIF was killed in action at Mouquet Farm in 1916.
Arthur enlisted in the RAN during April 1914. He took part in operations in German New Guinea during September 1914. Arthur served as a stoker aboard the HMAS Melbourne for much of the war and discharged from the RAN in mid-1919.
