WILFRED OLDFIELD JACKSON was born on 27th October, 1894, at Eaglehawk, Victoria, the son of Mr. Alfred Jackson and Mrs. Annie Jackson. He went to the Trinity Grammar School at Kew, Victoria, and in April, 1911, joined the staff of the Bank at Melbourne.
On 17th September, 1914, Wilfred Jackson enlisted as gunner in the 6th Battery, 2nd F. A. Brigade of the A.I.F., and left Australia with the First Contingent. He served in Egypt, Gallipoli and France, being promoted to lieutenant on 16th March, 1916, when he joined the 12th Battery, 4th Artillery Brigade of the A.I.F.
Wilfred Jackson was promoted to captain on 5th January, 1918, and for skilful reconnaissance work at Passchendaele, "which led to the ultimate success of the operation,” he was awarded the Military Cross.
