Born in South Broken Hill, NSW, Roy Mitchell Aitkenhead served in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). Before the war, he was an engine cleaner. He enlisted on the second of March 1916 when he was eighteen and was a Private for the 32nd Battalion. He was described to have a dark complexion with quote “yellowish” eyes, he was 5 feet 2 inches and weighed 108 pounds (48.98 Kg).  Roy Mitchell Aitkenhead embarked on the eleventh of April 1916 on board HMAT A60 Aeneas. It is unknown what happened from when Roy Mitchell Aitkenhead departed to when he arrived in France. In France Roy Mitchell Aitkenhead sustained a fractured rib and was left hospitalised. After his recovery, he was soon to sustain a gunshot wound to the right thigh (on 27 May 1918) which led to him having to be discharged on the thirteenth of February 1919. For his service he received the  British War Medal and the Victory medal.
