Husband  of Mabel Alice Hayes nee Magell of Alexander Road, Charlestown, Weymouth, Dorset, England. Joseph and Mabel married on 23 May 1916 in Broadchalk, Wiltshire, England

On 11 March 1916 he returned to Australia (first time) aboard HT Suevic as wounded

Commenced return to Australia (second time) on 21 December 1918 as wounded aboard HT Miltiades disembarking on 20 February 1919
