Probationary Constable John Joseph Carroll (Service No:653) served in the RAN from 27 February 1940 to 12 August 1940. In WWI, Trooper John Joseph Carroll (Service No:1893) served in the AIF as a Concentration Camp Guard from 17 May 1917 to 19 November 1917 ('unable to get parent's consent to Serve abroad' {NAA})

Tom was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1899, youngest of four children of John James Carroll (b1860 in Gosford, New South Wales) and Rebecca Mary Martin (b1872 in Binalong via Yass, New South Wales). John was a Labourer in 1897 when he and Rebecca married in Sydney, and following John's death in 1904, Rebecca remarried.

Tom worked in Sydney as an Engineer prior to 1917, and was a Bricklayer in 1921 when he married Aileen Catherine Moroney (b1897 in Sydney, New South Wales). Tom and Aileen settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Tom worked as a Bricklayer and Labourer until his death in 1943. Aileen died in 1974.
