Austin Hepburn, son of Mr. Thomas R. and Mrs. Emily M. Hepburn, was born at East Melbourne on 6th September, 1893. He was educated at the Xavier College, Kew, Victoria, and joined the service of the Bank on 1st August, 1913, at Melbourne.
He enlisted a few days after the outbreak of war, and left Australia with the 5th Battalion, being subsequently transferred to the 23rd Battalion.
Having served in Egypt and taken part in the Landing at Gallipoli, he remained on the Peninsula until the evacuation, and subsequently saw service on the various fronts in France and Flanders, taking part in the Battles of the Somme and of Messines.
Being promoted successively to the ranks of lance-corporal, corporal, lance-sergeant and sergeant, he was eventually granted a commission on 23rd August, 1917.
