He acted as Platoon Commander and led his platoon through very heavy machine gun and shell fire against the enemy's positions, and rushed and captured an enemy trench. During the 1st and 2nd October, although badly gassed, he continued to command his Platoon with courage, coolness and skill and his leadership enabled his men to consolidate posts East of the ST. QUENTIN CANAL.
