Denis Gerald O'FLANAGAN

Denis Gerald O’Flanagan was born on the 27th November 1876 to parents John Aloysius and Mary O’Flanagan (nee Byrne). On Denis’s WWI war records place of birth is listed as the Town of Lisadyra, Parish of Tuam in the County of Galway, Ireland.

From the WWI war records, it is known that Denis served for 2 years 8 months in the field forces in the 2nd Boer War in South Africa.

Records obtained from the Archives in South Africa, state that Denis O’Flanagan (regimental no 6760) served as a Sergeant with the Kings Liverpool Regiment and also served with the 19th Mounted Infantry. It appears that Denis joined the South African Constabulary on the 16th July 1902 at Pretoria and his Register number was B2056 and was dismissed on the 22nd October 1902 as being unsuitable for police duties the following paper was attached :
No.2056 Trooper D.G.O'Flanagan.
This man does not interest himself in his work nor does he discharge it intelligently. He is fit to return to his Corps being well posted in the duties of a P.C. He is neither steady, reliable, nor sober. He is apparently physically fit. He is not fitted for a police Constable. He is always smartly dressed and clean on duty.
Next reference dated 25th October 1905 and is where he has applied for 3 days occasional leave and shows his occupation as clerk and is addressed to the Secretary Law Department Pretoria via the Resident Magistrate Pietersburg.
Then the next item is where Denis requested a pay increase and for it to take effect from 13th April 1907.

Sometime between 1907 and 1915 Denis immigrated to Australia and was working as a Station Manager when he enlisted in the Defence Forces at Longreach on the 15th February 1915.

Denis enlisted in the defence forces on the 15/02/1915 at Longreach Queensland at the age of 37 years and 3 months. On Denis’s attestation paper, it is stated that Denis was a natural born British subject, born in the Parish of Tuam, near the town of Lisadyra County Galway, Ireland. Also on the paper, Denis’s trade was listed as Station Manager and that he had served in the Field Forces in South Africa (Boer War) for 2 years and 8 months.

The following details were listed on his Medical Examination Certificate:-

Age: 37 years 3 months
Height: 5 feet 43/8 inches
Weight: 7 stone 6 lbs
Chest: 33.31 inches
Complexion: Fair
Eyes: Grey
Hair: Brown
Religion: Roman Catholic
Distinctive Marks: Broken nose – deflect to eyelid
Transverse scar across throat

On the 24th March 1915, Denis was appointed to B Squadron, 11th Light Horse Regiment at Enoggera, Queensland, by Lieutenant Colonel W Grant commanding the 11th Light Horse Regiment. His regimental number was 325.

On the 29th August 1915, Denis was transferred to the 5th Light Horse Regiment at The Gallipoli Peninsula. The 5th LHR was taking on strength. On the 3rd September was attached to Divisional Headquarters in divisional Staff P.O. and promoted to the rank of Corporal while so employed. Returned from Divisional Headquarters and reverted to trooper on the 13th September 1915. On the 29th October 1915 promoted to temporary Lance Corporal.

On the 6th November 1915, severely wounded, gunshot wound to left arm causing a compound fracture of the left humerus. Not sure whether he received the wound on the 6th or was evacuated from Gallipoli Peninsula on that date.

On the 12th November 1915 disembarked from the HS (Hospital Ship) Deranha and admitted to the Floriana Hospital in Malta.

Transferred to the HT (Hired Transport) ship Formosa to be transported to England on the 5th February 1916. The HT Formosa transported the men from Malta to Naples, where on the 9th February 1916 they embarked on the HT (Hired Transport) Aquitania for England.

On the 18th February 1916, Denis was admitted to the 3rd Australian General Hospital at Wandsworth.

On the 24th June 1916, embarked on the HS (Hospital Ship) Euripides at Plymouth, England, destination Australia for discharge.
Denis was given a Medical Discharge, due to wounds received at the Gallipoli Peninsula, on the 6th September 1916.

Married Ivy Catherine Donald Hamilton, sister of Robert (Military Cross) and Malcolm (KIA – 3/8/17) Hamilton.
Had two boys
Malcolm James
Mervyn Peter, (WWII)

At the time Malcolm was born, Denis owned a property in Central Queensland called Elliven at Springsure. Sold Elliven and moved to Mt Pleasant property at Bogantungan (a railway town in Central Queensland) late 1920’s.

Had racehorses, two of them were named Lisadyra and Connemara in the 1920’s; racing colours were gold with green three leaf clover on the back.

Died 31st March 1951 and is buried in Rockhampton Central Queensland, Australia.
