Captain John Kaufman (Service No:T394) enlisted on 30 July 1942 and was attached to HQ Tasmania L of C when he died of Illness in service on 21 December 1945. Captain Kaufman was a Staff Clerk (Australian Permanent Military Forces and had served in WWI (RQMS; Service No:3496).
Born in 1887 in Melbourne Victoria, John was the youngest of two children of George Heinrich Kaufmann (b1829 in Hessen, Germany) and third wife Louisa Martha Foot (b1843 in London, England). Louisa had immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1855, arriving in Melbourne on board the Calliance. George (a Widower) was a Gardener and Louisa a Shopkeeper when they married in 1883 in Melbourne, Victoria where they settled and raised their family. George worked as an Orchardist until his death in 1911.
John worked initially as an Orchardist before becoming a Staff Clerk with the Australian Permanent Military Forces. Following WWI he settled in Hobart Tasmania where in 1922 he married Alice Anne Kennedy (b1890 in Southport, Tasmania). John and Alice lived in Hobart where John was a Soldier (Staff Clerk). He enlisted for service in WWII in 1942 and died of illness in 1945. Alice died in 1946.
