James was the eighth of eleven children of Terence Brady (1835 in Ireland) and Susannah Maher (b1850 in East Maitland, NSW). Terence arrived in Sydney NSW on board the Samuel Boddington in 1855 and was working as a Carrier in 1870 when he and Susannah married in Singleton, NSW. The couple lived in Tamworth, Keepit, Gunnedah and Cobbadah where Terence was a Farmer.

In 1912 James married Josephine Cornell (b1888 in Bega, NSW) in Moree, NSW. Following Josephine's death in 1914, James was working as a Contractor in Warwick, QLD when he enlisted in the AIF. He served as a Private (Service No:456) and in 1917 in Grantham, Lincolnshire married Dorothy Maud Emma Lounds (b1894 in Grantham, Lincolnshire) - Dorothy was working as a Chemist's Cashier. 

James and Dorothy settled in Sydney, NSW where James worked as a Carpenter and Joiner. He served in the ACMF (Private; Service No:N237069) in WWII and died in 1966. Dorothy died in 1976.
