Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

88 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 27th August 1934, Private John Robert McInnes, 4th Australian Pioneer Battalion (Reg No-1979), butcher and cook from Hume Street, Gloucester, New South Wales and 9 or 39 Evescourt Road, New Lambton, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 54. PRESBYTERIAN-22NW. 18.

Born at Wards River, New South Wales on the 20th December 1879 to Finlay or Finley and Emma Susanna or Susanah McInnes; husband of Emma (Emily) McInnes nee Jones (married 1902, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 22.11.1953) of 24 The Crescent, Wallsend, N.S.W., John enlisted June 1915 with the 17th Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 20.6.1918 (gassed, mild).

Invalided to England 28.6.1918.

Transferred to hospital 9.7.1918 (gas poisoning).
John returned home July 1919, not being discharged until the 15th May 1920.

Mr. McInnes’s name has been inscribed on the Gloucester Presbyterian Church First World War 
The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the Gloucester Shire First World War Roll of Honor.

I have placed poppies on John’s white marble headstone in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Service record states died Randwick Prince of Wales Hospital 25/8/1934, Imp. War Graves List, 20.8.1951.
Younger brother Herbert Finlay or Finley (Gunner, 34th Battalion & Australian Field Artillery Details, Reg No-3088, born 1885, Muswellbrook, N.S.W., died 20.12.1947, age 62) also resting at the cemetery. ANGLICAN 3-176. 30.

Younger brother Alfred Charles (2nd & 54th Battalions, Reg No-658, Original Anzac, born 1882, Gunnedah, N.S.W., died 20.9.1949, Glebe, N.S.W., no death or funeral notice located) also served 1st A.I.F.
