Biography

Herbert Henry Gallagher was born in Keswick, Adelaide, South Australia. He was a Roman Catholic and he weighed 159 pounds. His next of kin was M Thomas Gallagher which was his father. Herbert enlisted in the war on the 18th of July, 1915. He was 5 feet and 8 and a quarter tall at the time. He had a dark complexion. His occupation was a caterer.

 

Herbert embarked to the war on the 27th of October 1915 on the H.M.A.T Benalla. On the 8/5/1916 he got a promotion to Sergeant. This was a big step for Herbert considering he was a Private when he joined.

 

On the 5/5/16 he got transferred from the 27th Battalion to the fifty-third battalion.  The 27th Battalion fought in France as part of their 2nd Australian division in the trenches from 7th of April and 27th of July. On the 24/12/16, Herbert got promoted to Regimental Quantity Surveyor for the 27th Battalion. Herbert was a rifleman in the 27th Battalion and suffered no injury’s during the war.

 

On the 10/5/18 he got paid in France for serving his country. He arrived back to Australia on 3/5/19. He received a Military Medal, Victory Medal and a British War Medal.
