Biography contributed by Jeffrey Oates

Hugh McKechnie was the son of Hugh McKechnie Snr a merchant seaman and Mary (Crookston) McKechnie and was raised in Glasgow, Scotland.

During WW1 Hugh, at age 20 years, enlisted in the 11th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry (11 HLI) as a private, seeing active service in France where he was wounded in action.

Hugh migrated out to Western Australia in 1923 on board the SS Barrabool which left London on 15 March 1923, to join his sister Minnie who had already migrated to WA in 1905.

Hugh lived with his sister Minnie (Crookston) Minorgan in East Perth for some time and then ultimately lived at the Sunset Hospital in Dalkeith beside the Swan River until his death in 1974.  Sunset Hospital was built in 1906 as the "Claremont Old Men's Home", its design was based on a military model,

Hugh was buried at Karrakatta Cemetery beside the grave of his sister Minnie.
