97 years ago today, on the Saturday afternoon of the 25th August 1923 (4 funerals on this day), Private John Miller, 31st Battalion, (Reg No-2370), miner from 101 off Darby Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales and 16 Robertson Street, Carrington, N.S.W., father of six, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 44. ANGLICAN 1-08. 19.

Born at Newcastle, (Glebe) New South Wales on the 12th March 1879 to Jacob and Mary Miller; husband of Beatrice Ivy Miller nee Kyle (married 1899, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 1965, 41 years a widow, also sleeping here), John enlisted September 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 12.5.1916, (stone in kidney), 19.5.1916 (gastric ulcer), John returned home July 1916, being discharged as medically unfit on the 4th November 1916.

Mr Miller’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour or the Cooks Hill St. John's Anglican Church Honor Roll or any other known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

Daughter Janet Anzac Miller also sleeping here (A Bud in Heaven, born 1917, died 1919 - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article139653375).

There is no indication on John’s headstone that he served during The Great War, so I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label, kindly supplied by Andrea Gerrard and John Thomas, to honour his duty for God, King and Country.
