FRANCIS VERNON FELS was born on 15th April, 1899, at Cue, Western Australia, the son of Mr. Ernest D. Fels, Postmaster at Kalgoorlie, and Mrs. Fels. He was educated at the Christian Brothers’ College, Kalgoorlie, and entered the service of the Bank in the same town on 12th April, 1916.
Francis Fels enlisted on 21st July, 1918, with the Reinforcements from West Australia. He left in the S.S. “Boonah” in October, 1918, but on reaching Durban found that the Armistice had been signed, and returned to Australia. On the return journey a severe outbreak of influenza occurred on board the “Boonah.” Mr. Fels was specially mentioned for valuable assistance rendered at that time. He was discharged on 9th January, 1919.
