Desmond (Leo) was the second of three children of James Francis Doyle (b1888 in Warracknabeal, Victoria) and Ethel May Conduit (b1884 in Ararat, Victoria. James - a Baker - and Ethel - a Housekeeper - married in 1912 in Warracknabeal, Victoria. They moved to Melbourne where they raised their family - living briefly in Ferntree Gully when James worked for the Railways. 

Desmond was a Sheet Metal Worker in Melbourne in January 1939 when he enlisted in the Militia (Private; Service No:323629), serving with 46th Battalion until he transferred to the Reserves in October 1939. In March 1944 he enlisted with the RAAF (Leading Aircraftman; Service No:148225) and was attached to Eastern Area HQ when he was Discharged in November 1948.

In 1950 Desmond was working in Melbournes as a Sheet Metal Worker when he married Sheila Elizabeth Larkin (b1918 in Benalla, Victoria). Sheila - a Salewoman - and Desmond settled in Melbourne where Desmond was a Metal Worker. He died in 1976 and Sheila died in 2006.
