88 years ago today, on the Thursday afternoon of the 23rd January 1936, Private Charles James Green, 53rd Battalion (Reg No-1129), labourer from 4 Nott Street, Merewether, New South Wales, father of three, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 63. BAPTIST-H SW. 17.

Born at Wallsend, New South Wales on the 3rd November 1872 to Frances, died 18.7.1949, Newcastle, N.S.W., buried at BAPTIST-H SW. 17, and Jane Green, died 11.10.1875, Wallsend, N.S.W., sleeping at Old Wallsend Cemetery?; husband of Gwendoline (Gwendeline) Green nee? (married?, died 30.3.1941, Lambton, N.S.W., age 61) of 180 Young Road, Lambton, N.S.W., Charles enlisted on the 2nd January 1916 with the 35th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.
Admitted to hospital 19.2.1917 (acute bronchitis, severe).

Commenced return to Australia 21.7.1917.

Charles arrived home on the 18th September 1917, being discharged medically unfit (chronic bronchitis) on the 16th October 1917.

Mr. Green’s name has been inscribed on the Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates, Newcastle South Public School Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at Charles’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
