The son of Patrick & Ellen Keleghan of Glebe Point, Sydney, N.S.W., William enlisted in the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force in 16 August 1914 and was discharged on 18 January 1915. He re-enlisted on 22 February 1915 and was appointed Staff Sergeant Major, Service No. 680, Australian Instructional Corps, Liverpool Camp. He died aged 31 years.
He is a recent addition to the Roll of Great War dead having been accepted for commemoration as Great War dead on 20th July 2017.
