Sergeant Joan Tanner (Service No:90682) enlisted in the WAAF on 23 January 1942 at No 2 Recruiting Centre Melbourne as an Aircraftwoman I - mustered as Clerk General. ACWI Tanner served with No 2 WAAF Training Depot and 1 WAAF Depot, and was a Sergeant attached to Air Force Head Quarters Eastern Area (DPS) at Discharge on 1 November 1945.

Joan was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1923, eldest of two children of Walter John Tanner (b1893 in Blackwarry, Gippsland, Victoria) and Stella Eocean Owen (b1896 in Chiltern, Victoria). Herbert was a Teacher in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF, and in 1921 in Wagga Wagga NSW, he and Stella married. They settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Walter was a Teacher - and served with the ACMF in WWII (Captain; Service No:V6706).

Joan worked in Melbourne as a Junior Typiste with the Camberwell City Council, and was a Stenographer with Leighton Irwin & Coy when she enlisted in the WAAF. In 1945 in Melbourne, Joan married Stanley (Stan) Allan Roberts (b1920 in Adelaide, South Australia) - Stan was serving in the RAAF (Corporal; Service No:39800). Joan and Stan settled in Melbourne (Box Hill, Mornington, Frankston) where Stan worked as an Electrical Fitter/Engineer. In the late 1970s Joan and Stan moved to the Gold Coast in QLD, and later to Kuranda via Cairns. Joan died in 2004 and Stan in 2013.
