Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Aircraftwoman Ruth Evelyn Artis (Service No:174635) enlisted in the WAAAF at No 1 Recruiting Centre Melbourne on 4 December 1944 (then under her maiden name of Barby) - mustered as Trainee, remustered as Armament Assistant. ACW Artis served at Larundel in Bundoora, Ascot Vale and RAAF Base East Sale, where she belted and packed ammunition. ACW Artis was attached to AG School at Discharge on 1 November 1945.

Ruth was born at Port Fairy, Victoria in 1926, third of four children of John William Barby (b1896 in Foxhow, Victoria) and Mary (Molly) Ruth Meade (b1899 in Cobden, Victoria). John (a Labourer) and Molly met through waltzing competitions and married in Camperdown in 1921. They lived in Foxhow where John worked as a Labourer, and Port Fairy where he was a Labourer and Farmer.

Ruth worked in Port Fairy as a Telephonist and was a Housemaid at Portland Hotel in 1944 when she enlisted in the WAAAF. In 1945 Ruth married Albert Charles Artis (b1918 in Port Fairy, Victoria) - Albert was in the AIF (Sergeant; Service No:VX47693). Ruth and Albert settled at Port Fairy, where they raised their family and Albert was a Labourer and Carpenter. Ruth and Albert divorced in the late 1950s, and Ruth remarried, living in Port Fairy and Branxholme before settling in Warrnambool, where she died in 2008.
