Corporal John George Smith (Service No:T255450) served in the ACMF with 30 Garrison Battalion (Tas) from 7 November 1939 to 23 October 1945. In his Attestation Paper, Corporal Smith states he served with the Infantry in WWI at Gallipoli and France - brother Edward (Service No:331) was KiA at Gallipoli in 1915.
Born in 1889 in Launceston Tasmania, Jock was the fifth of thirteen children of George Thomas Smith (b1859 at Oatlands, Tasmania) and Mary Ann Diaper-Scanlan (b1865 at Oatlands, Tasmania). George (a Labourer) and Mary Ann (a Domestic Servant) married in 1882 in Oatlands, Tasmania where they settled and raised their family and George was a Labourer.
Jock worked as a Labourer in Launceston and in 1920 married Leila Louisa Rachel Blyth (b1903 at Nabowla, Tasmania). Jock and Lelia settled in Launceston where Jock worked as a Labourer. Jock died in 1964 and Leila in 1981.
