Add my storyBiography contributed by Faithe Jones
Harold was the second son of Mr. Richard and Lucy Massey of Bondi, born in Melbourne on May 24, 1887, and educated at St. Joseph's College, Sydney. He entered the composing department of the Sydney Morning Herald in 1913.
He enlisted on August 20, 1915, in the Field Engineers, being attached to the 1st Company on arrival in France on April 1, 1916. He participated in a great number of engagements, including Pozieres, Moquet Farm, Bullecourt, Polygon Wood, Passchendaele, Merris, Villers Bretonneux and Hargicourt, remaining on service till the signing of the armistice.
Harold enlisted in WW2 as NX56863 but put his age down stating he had been born in 1901 and was only 39 years of age. He did say he had previous military experience served as Sapper 2407. He was still working as a compositor at the time and had been residing at Baldwin Street, Gordon NSW and was married. He served here in Australia for the whole of his WW2 service.
Interestingly on his headstone his age was listed as 49 years being born in 1901 rather than the 63 years from his birthdate given previously.
