Donald embarked with the 37th Battalion from Melbourne on board HMAT A 17 Port Lincoln on 20 October 1916 and arrived at Plymouth on 9 January 1917. They were sent to France on 3 October. Donald was hospitalised twice throughout his service in France in 1917 and 1918 with scabies. He returned to Australia on the Port Melbourne on 5 July 1919 and was discharged on 25 September. Donald was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
