Let us remember a Fallen Soldier of The Great War memorialised at Mimi Cemetery, N.S.W.

On the 8th April 1918, Private Joseph Bilbie, referred to as Joker, 34th Battalion (Reg No-1080), engine driver (Messrs. J. and A. Brown Minmi Colliery), from Church Street, Minmi, New South Wales, Died of Wounds (GSW right thigh, gas infection), age-29 Years 5 Months, at the 1st South African General Hospital, Abbeville, France. Villers-Bretonneux, France.

No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.
Born at Minmi, New South Wales on the 17th October 1888 to James (died 4.12.1907, Minmi, New South Wales, age 80, buried at Right Hand Side, Section 12, Plot 017), from near Church of England, Minmi, N.S.W., and Mary Bilbie nee Russell (died 16.3.1929, age 77, mother of 8?, sleeping at Right Hand Side, Section 12, Plot 017, from near Church of England, Minmi, N.S.W. and Church Street, Minmi, N.S.W., Joe enlisted on the 25th January 1916, age 27 years 3 months, at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 2nd May 1916.
Disembarked Plymouth, England 23.6.1916.

Wounded in action - 12.10.1917 (GSW left buttock, mild, First Battle of Passchendaele, Belgium), 5.4.1918 (GSW left buttock, Villers-Bretonneux, France).

Joe is resting at Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, France. Plot IV Row A Grave 1.

Mr. Bilbie's name has been inscribed on the Minmi Roll of Honour. Its original position was near the Post Office at Woodford Street, Minmi, New South Wales. A member of the Minmi Federated Engine-drivers and Firemen's Association. Not sure if a Roll of Honour was ever produced. Name possibly inscribed on the Minmi Lodge No.72 M.U.I.O.O.F. Roll of Honour, unveiled on the 26th July 1916, 19 names inscribed, whereabouts unknown.

I have placed poppies at the Bilbie memorialised gravesite in remembrance of the service and supreme sacrifice of their son Joe for God, King & Country. Right Hand Side, Section 12, Plot 017.
