Charles William JENNINGS (Service Number 1688) was born on 26th July 1880 at Newbridge.

He began his Railway career on 9th October 1911 as a lifter and packer in the Per-Way Branch. He worked mostly in the Western Division. Eventually he changed his position to a labourer in October 1912. He became a fettler in August 1913. He worked between Nyngan and Bourke; Molong and Forbes; Blayney and Demondrille; Wimbledon and Blayney.

On 29th January 1916, he was granted leave to join the AIF. He was 35-years-old when he enlisted. He embarked at Sydney on 14th April 1916 on HMAT A40 ‘Ceramic’. He disembarked at Port Said (Egypt) on 16th May 1916.

He embarked from Alexandria on 29th July 1916 on HMAT ‘Arcadian’. He disembarked at Southampton (England) on 9th August. Later in August, he embarked for France, and marched into Etaples on 11th September. He joined his unit on 28th September 1916.

He was killed in action on 25th October 1916 in France. He was 36 when he died, he has no known grave and is commemorated in the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, Picardie, France.

Following his death, his mother was sent his war medals in honour of his service. He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
