Thomas Frederick RAINE (Service Number 3162) was born on 12th January 1891 at Kangaroo Point, Brisbane. He worked as a casual tram conductor in Sydney from 3rd April 1914 and became a permanent employee from 6th August 1916. At that time, he had been granted leave to join the Expeditionary Forces on 6th September 1915.
He enlisted in Sydney that same day and stated that he had been apprenticed in Brisbane for three years to W R Block. His military experience consisted of five years with the Australian Field Artillery. His wife Kathleen was nominated as his next of kin. He was allotted to the 7th Reinforcements to the 17th Battalion. He embarked HMAT ‘Suevic’ at Sydney on 23rd December 1915.
He was given the rank and pay of a Corporal for the voyage only and reverted to Private upon being taken on the strength of the 17th Battalion in Egypt on 15th March 1916.
From Egypt the Battalion moved to the Western Front in France.
Raine was wounded on 6th June 1916, re-joining his unit on 3rd July. He was wounded again on 26th July 1916, but this must have been more serious as he did not re-join the unit until 21st September. In November he was sick in hospital for brought three weeks. The same occurred in February 1917.
In October 1917 he was wounded on a third occasion but remained on duty.
Raine was gassed on 1st April 1918 and then had another period of sickness in May 1918. This time he was invalided to England and admitted to the Horton Co of London War Hospital where he was diagnosed with a gastric ulcer. He remained in England for the rest of the war.
He was charged with the offence of being Absent Without Leave from Hurdcott for two days in September 1918. The penalty for this was to be admonished by Captain G A F Smith and the loss of two days’ pay.
Raine survived the war and returned to Australia onboard ‘Ceramic’ on 25th January 1919. He had not resumed duty with the Tramways, when he died at his home in Watkin Street, Bondi, of heart disease on 30th March. An inquest was not called for and the death was accepted as war related. He was buried in the Church of England Cemetery at Waverley.
