John was the fourth of five children of John (Jack) Joseph O'Mara (b1875 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Florence (Bub) Beatrice Mary Towton (b1883 in Perth, WA). Jack was a Horse Trainer in Perth WA when he served in the Boer War (Farrier Sergeant; Service No:2830) and in 1904 married Bub in Perth, WA - Bub was the daughter of well known WA identity George Towton (Hore Breeder/Owner/Trainer/Racer and Jockey) who had stables in Belmont, Perth, WA. Jack and Bub settled in Belmont where they raised their family and Jack was a Horse Trainer. Jack's brothers - Bill and Matt served in WWI.
John worked as a Clerk in Perth, WA and in June 1940 enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:WX4801). He served in the Middle East (22 September 1940 - 19 February 1943) and New Guinea (7 August 1943 - 18 May 1944) and was hospitalised with Malaria. John was a Warrant Officer II attached to 2/4 Australian Light Anti Aircraft Regiment when he was Discharged in September 1945. John's siblings - Mat, Ethel and Bill - also served in WWII.
Returning to Perth, WA John was working as a Clerk in 1946 when he married Joyce Grono (nee Phillips; b1913 in Guildford, WA). The couple settled in South Perth, WA where John worked as Clerk and Medical Representative. John died in 1962 and Joyce in 2003.
