Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery, not forgotten.

72 years ago today, on the Monday morning of the 21st November 1949, Trooper Alexander James Hipwell, also known as Lex, 1st Australian Light Horse Regiment (Reg No-3562), labourer and coal miner from the Aberdare Hotel, Weston, New South Wales and Elford Avenue, Weston, N.S.W. and 30 O'Mara Street, Mayfield East, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 52. CATHOLIC 2-53. 146.

Born at Ravensworth (near Scone), New South Wales on the 23rd February 1897 to James (licensee, Aberdare Hotel, Weston, N.S.W.) and Sarah Teresa Hipwell; husband of Stella Mary Hipwell nee Williams (married 1943, Hay, N.S.W., died 1991, 42 years a widow, sleeping here), Lex enlisted August 1915 with the 30th Battalion at West Maitland, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 23.1.1919 (acute lobar pneumonia, seriously ill).

Lex was invalided home April 1919, being discharged on the 19th May 1919.

Mr. Hipwell’s name has been inscribed on the Boolaroo District Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the Scone District First World War Honour Roll. Note – Weston never produced a WW1 War Memorial or a Roll of Honour. 2 Church and 2 Lodge and a Public School Roll of Honour were unveiled.

I have placed poppies on Lex’s white marble headstone in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Many thanks to Mr Hipwell's niece Clare Shiels for the photos and family history.

Lex Hipwell was my mother's brother. I have photos of when he first enlisted for WW1.

One postcard has a letter written on back with reference to the fact that they went on strike because they didn't get fed when they arrived at camp.

A sad thing was that after he arrived back in Australia on 15 May 1919, his sister died on the 16th June 1919 and his mother died on the 19th July 1919, both of Spanish Flu.

Also served 2nd A.I.F. (N102462, 16th Garrison, Hay, N.S.W. P.O.W. Camp).

Service record states Died after Discharge, 20/11/1949.

Lest We Forget.
