Died on this date – 6th January…… Walter Reginald Martyn was born in 1891 in the district of Marrickville, Sydney, NSW.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 12th January, 1916 as a 24 year old, single, Labourer from Artarmon, Sydney, NSW.

Private Walter Martyn, Service number 6298, embarked from Sydney on HMAT Euripides (A14) on 9th September, 1916 with 2nd Infantry Battalion, 20th Reinforcements & disembarked at Plymouth, England on 26th October, 1916.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.
He was marched out to Dinton, Wiltshire on 21st November, 1916 from No. 3 Command Depot.

On 8th December, 1916 Private Martyn was marched in from Perham Down to 1st Training Battalion at Larkhill, Wiltshire.

Private Martyn was sent sick to Hospital for observation on 30th December, 1916 from 1st Training Battalion – No. 7 & 8 Camps, Durrington.

On 1st January, 1917 Private Martyn was admitted to Fargo Military Hospital with Pleurisy, seriously ill.

Private Walter Martyn died on 6th January, 1917 at Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire from Pneumonia.
He was buried in Durrington Cemetery, Wiltshire, England where 140 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
