Son of Albert Thompson Oliver and Mary Oliver nee Stacey of Main Street, Bacchus Marsh, Victoria.

Brother of Edward Arthur Oliver who returned to Australia on 2 January 1920 having served with the 2nd Light Railway Operating Company. Edward later returned to England

Commenced return to Australia(first time) aboard HT Runic with heart issues. He was re-attested on 9 May 1917

Commenced return to Australia on 19 April 1919 aboard HT Sardinia disembarking on 8 June 1919
