Frank Seymour Coats was born and raised in Upper Sturt in the Adelaide hills. Before he enrolled in the army, he was a gardener who worked locally around the Adelaide hills. Frank Seymour Coats was a 3 year senior cadet before he served in the army as an officer. When Frank Seymour Coats joined the war at the age of 19 and 9 months, he was five feet and 9 and half inches tall, he weighed 134 lbs. Frank Seymour had brown eyes and brown hair. Frank Seymour had a mum named Clara coats.

Seymour did not make it to Gallipoli before his 10th Battalion was withdrawn. In Egypt he was transferred to the 50th Battalion and later to the Medium and Heavy Trench Mortar Batteries, in which he served for the remainder of the war.
