Herbert was the youngest of three children of Leslie Herbert Nicholls (b1874 in Adelaide, South Australia) and Muriel Agnes Rosselloty (b1885 in Busselton, WA). Leslie (a School Teacher) and Muriel married in Busselton in 1903. By 1915 the family was in Southern Cross and by 1925 had moved to Perth WA, and then by 1936 to Karragullen - Leslie was a School Teacher. Muriel died in 1933 and Leslie in 1949.

Herbert was working as an Orchardist in Karragullen, WA in 1938 when he married Ethel Mavis Carthew (b1918 in Northam, WA). Herbert and Ethel settled in Karragullen where Herbert was an Orchardist. In March 1942 he enlisted in the ACMF (Private; Service No:W62328) and served with 2nd (Fremantle) Battalion VDC and 12th (Jarrah) Battalion VDC. He was Discharged in 1946.

In the 1960s Herbert and Ethel moved to Gosnells in Cannington WA where Herbert worked as a Fruit Fly Inspector. Herbert died in 1997 and Ethel in 2015.
