Private Frederick Leslie Binns (Service No:W58271) served in the ACMF with 1 (WA) Battalion VDC from 27 February 1942 to 11 July 1944. Private Binns' Attestation Paper notes 'Specially enlisted in accordance with LHQ S/M 17864 of 19. 9. 42 for purpose of Demolition duties only at Oil Companys' (NAA).

Eldest of three children, Fred was born in Fremantle, Western Australia in 1913 to Harry Leslie Binns (b1885 in Sydney, New South Wales) and Lucy Helen Nelson (b1893 in Westport, New Zealand). Harry started work as a Junior Labourer with the WAGR in Fremantle in 1901, and was a Wood Machinist with the Railways when he and Lucy married in 1911 in Fremantle. Harry and Lucy settled in North Fremantle, where they raised their family and Harry worked as a Machinist and Labourer.

Fred started work in Fremantle as a Warehouse Employee, and in 1940 in Fremantle married Dorothy (Dorrie) Ada Onley (b1911 in Fremantle, Western Australia). Fred and Dorrie settled in Fremantle, where they raised their family and Fred was a Petrol Drum Filler in 1942 when he enlisted in the Army. Fred and Dorrie lived in Fremantle and White Gum Valley, and Fred worked as a Labourer and Warehouseman before retiring to Rockingham. Fred died in 2001 and Dorrie in 2002.
