Eldest of the three brothers who served in WWII, Private Arthur Edward Onley (W58250) served in the ACMF with 1st (WA) Battalion VDC from 27 February 1942 to 11 July 1944.
Mick was born in North Fremantle, Western Australia in 1913, fifth of eight children of Walter (Wally) Charles Onley (b1880 in Thebarton, Adelaide, South Australia) and Amy Ellen Jones (b1882 in Perth, Western Australia). Wally was an Assistant Butcher in Adelaide before moving to Western Australia in 1903, where he was a Driver in 1904 when he and Amy married in Fremantle. Wally and Amy settled in North Fremantle, where they raised their family and Wally was a Driver.
Mick worked as a Labourer and Vacuum Oil Blender, and played football for North Fremantle. In 1939 he married his first wife Charlotte (Maureen) Gertrude Noonan (b1918 in Fremantle, Western Australia) in Fremantle. Mick was working in North Fremantle as a Storeman in 1942 when he enlisted in the Army, and following his Discharge, he and Maureen settled in North Fremantle, where they raised their family and Mick was a Labourer. Maureen died in 1950, and Mick remarried in 1954 to Olive Kathleen Culquhoun (nee Hart; b1911 in London, England) - Olive had immigrated in 1913 with her parents, arriving in Fremantle on board the Belgic. Mick and Olive settled in Cottesloe (North Fremantle), where Mick worked as a Storeman. Olive died in 1968 and Mick in 2005.
