James was the seventh of nine children of Robert Goodlad (b1868 at Meal, Burra in Shetland, Scotland) and Joan Smith (b1865 at Sandwick in Shetland, Scotland). Robert - a Fisherman - and Joan - a Housemaid - married in 1888 in Burra, Shetland in Scotland. They raised their family in Shetland, Scotland.
James was a Fisherman when he immigrated in 1924 - arriving in Fremantle, WA on board the Benalla. He moved to Bunbury WA where he was a Waterside Worker in 1929 when he married Amy Louisa Bedford Green (b1908 in Bunbury, WA). By 1940 James and Amy had moved to Albany, WA where James was a Fisheries Inspector. In 1942 James enlisted in the ACMF (Private; Service No:W88006) and was attached to 6th Battalion VDC when he was Discharged in December 1943.
James and Amy settled in Bunbury WA where James was a Fisheries Inspector, He died in 1984 and Amy in 1993.
