47 years ago today, on the 25th June 1974, Lance Corporal George Basil Smith, 34th Battalion (Reg No-892), blacksmith’s striker from 63 Charles Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 82. ANGLICAN 1-34A. 78.
Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 18th February 1892 to Bushby and Susan Smith; husband of Dulcey May Smith nee Le Mottee (married 1922, Wickham, N.S.W., died 1950), George enlisted March 1916 at Rutherford, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 9.9.1916 (scabies), and wounded in action - 5.4.1917 (GSW right thigh, fracture of right femur), George returned home August 1917, being discharged medically unfit on the 26th February 1918.
Mr. Smith’s name has been inscribed on the Honeysuckle Point Railway Workshops Roll of Honour (photo, unveiled on the 25th May 1915, 10 names originally inscribed, 44 names now inscribed, located at the Newcastle Interchange, Wickham, N.S.W.).
I have placed poppies at George’s gravesite in remembrance of his service for God, King and Country.
