Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1907, John was the eldest child on Bruce Andrew Allan (b1879 in Scotland) and Jessie (Kate) Catherine McAlpine Adam (b1881 in Scotland). Bruce (an Agricultural Labourer) and Jessie (a Chemist's Invoice Clerk) married in Glasgow in 1906 and emigrated with their two sons in 1912, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Belgic. The family settled in Fremantle WA where Bruce was a Cellar Hand and Storekeeper.
John worked as a Cashier and Clerk in Fremantle WA and in 1933 married Jean Gover McCubbing (b1908 in Uddingston, Sctolland) - Jean was working as a Typist in Claremont Fremantle, and had emigrated with her mother and siblings in 1912 (following her father's death), arriving in Albany WA on board the Persic. John and Jean settled at Arrino near Three Springs WA where John was a General Storekeeper and Postmaster and served with the Militia (11th Battalion) for nine years before enlisting with the ACMF. John was a Lieutenant (Service No:W72051) attached to 7 Battalion VDC from 22 April 1942 to 15 October 1945.
John and Jean remained in Arrino WA - John was active in his local community (Committee member of Three Springs Agricultural Society) and in the early 1950s purchased a farm at Dudawa in East Arrino WA. By the late 1950s John and Jean had moved to Perth WA where John worked as an Accountant. He died in 1996 and Jean in 2004,
