Lance Sergeant Wilfred James John Towie (Service No:WX31941) first served with the ACMF (Private; Service No:W40592) - 11th Battalion and 114th Mobile Bath Unit from 7 January 1942, and Discharged to enlist in the AIF on 31 July 1942. He was promoted to Corporal on 6 March 1944 and Lance Sergeant on 24 July 1945. Lance Sergeant Towie served with 110 Casualty Clearing Station in New Guinea (24 March 1945 to 6 December 1945) and was Discharged on 21 June 1946.
Jim was born in 1923 in Jardee WA to Wilfred Towie (b1902 in Lancashire, England) and Gretna Doreen O'Grady (b1903 in Fremantle, WA). Wilfred had immigrated with his parents and siblings in 1906, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Orontes and growing up in Balbarrlup and Jardinup. Wilfred (an Engine Driver) and Gretna married in 1923 and were living in Jardanup in 1924 when Gretna died. Wilfred was working as an Engine Driver at Mornington Mills in 1933 when he remarried to Alma May Turner (b1912 in Bridgetown, WA). Wilfred served in WWII (Private; Service No:WX12220) and he and Alma divorced in 1952. That year Wilfred married his third wife, Leila Edith Fairclough (b1899 in Kanmantoo, South Australia). Wilfred and Leila lived in Perth where Wilfred was a Steel Construction Worker and Welder.
Jim worked as a Farm Hand in Jardee (in his Attestation Paper he also stated he was a Barman in Manjimup) before his service in WWII. Following his Discharge, Jim was a Timber Worker in Manjimup, where in 1947 he married Jean Rapier (b1931 in Bridgetown, WA). Jim and Jean settled in Manjimup where they raised their family and Jim was a Timber Worker - he was injured in 1950 when hit by a falling limb during felling operations. Jim died in Kalgoorlie in 1974 and Jean died in 2012.
