Joseph was the eighth of nine children of Amos Edwin Wickerson (b1859 in Sussex, England) and Edith Lucy Baker (b1866 in Sussex, England. Joseph - a Farm Labourer - and Edith - an unemployed Nurse's Girl - both arrived in Cooktown, QLD on board the Duke of Buccleuch in April 1883. They married in Brisbane, QLD in August 1883 and settled at Diddillibah where Amos was a Selector before relocating to Burpengary and then to Bli Bli on the Sunshine Coast. Amos was a Farmer.

Brother Arthur Henry (Private; Service No:Q9029) also served briefly with 11 Depot Battalion that year.

Joseph returned briefly to Bli Bli before moving to Kunghur, NSW near the QLD border. He was a Farmer in 1918 when he married Cynthia Annie Sheather (b1899 in Casino, NSW). They settled in the Byron Bay region where Joseph was a Farmer - initially at Billnudgel and then at Myocum.

In November 1941 Joseph enlisted in the Australian Army. He served as a Corporal (Service No:N282687) in the ACMF until 30 June 1947.
