John Thomas Davies was born in Port Melbourne, Victoria. He was employed as a fruiterer and greengrocer before joining the AIF. He was raised in Adelaide, South Australia, at 298 Currie Street, where he shared a home with his mother, Mrs. Minnie Davies. At the time of his enlistment, Davies was unmarried and was associated with the Church of England.
In Adelaide, South Australia, on August 23, 1915, Davies enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). Prior to enlisting in the AIF, his enlistment records show that he had no military experience. He enlisted as a Private in the 8th Reinforcement, 27th Infantry Battalion, at the age of almost thirty. On January 12, 1916, his regiment left Adelaide on board HMAT A30 Borda. He was part of the 27th Infantry Battalion from the 23/8/15 to the 31/10/15 until he was transferred to the 10th Battalion on the 1/11/15.
Davies received the Military Medal for bravery and devotion to duty at Lihones in Ausgust 1918. DAvies alongw tih another Private worked continuously for 36 hours as stretcher bearers after all other bearers had been been wounded. Once they moved all the wounded they went back and removed all who had been killed.
July 12, 1919, saw John Thomas Davies return to Australia following the end of the war. sadly, full information regarding his post-service life, including the location and reason of his death, was not obtainable. However, we do know that he was buried at 161 West Terrace, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia, on January 20, 1948, following his passing.
