60 years ago today, on the 30th September 1964, Private Alexander Evans, 53rd Battalion (Reg No-68A), gas labourer from Kendall Street, Lambton, New South Wales and Wallsend?, N.S.W., father of three?, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 78. BAPTIST-L NE. 31.

Born at Lambton, New South Wales on the 1st September 1886 to William and Margaret Evans; husband of Lettie Evans nee Hafey, married 1906, Minmi, N.S.W., died 18.12.1972, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 86, sleeping here.

Alex enlisted on the 20th November 1915 with the 35th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.

Admitted to hospital 10.12.1916 (dental), 9.1.1917 (septic foot), 19.1.1917 (bronchitis), 20.10.1917 (bronchitis), 9.2.1918 (chronic bronchitis).

Granted furlough from 29.3.1917 to 12.4.1917 and 11.1.1918 to 25.1.1918.

Commenced return to Australia 12.5.1918.

Alex arrived home on the 5th July 1918, being discharged medically unfit (chronic bronchitis) on the 3rd October 1918.

Mr. Evan’s name has been inscribed on the Lambton Park Citizens' Memorial Gates, Lambton and New Lambton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Newcastle Gas & Coke Company Limited Roll of Honor and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at Alex’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
