Bernard Francis (Ben), was the seventh child of Edward and Catherine Hogan of Mackay, Queensland. c1913 Ben went to the USA where he worked as a ranch hand in Sacramento Valley, California. He returned to the canefields around Cairns where he enlisted in the 25th Battalion. He served mainly in France and was wounded in action in Polygon Wood in Belguim. He was sent to Harefield hospital in Dorset, England. As part of his recovery he travelled through most of Dorset on a bicycle. He returned to Australia in March of 1919 where he married Bertha Bradby and went on to have seven children: Roy, Maureen, Edward, Claire, Bernard, Michael and Valmae.

Bernard Francis (Ben), was the seventh child (of eleven) of Edward and Catherine Hogan of Mackay, Queensland. c1913 Ben went to the USA where he worked as a ranch hand in Sacramento Valley, California. He returned to the canefields around Cairns where he enlisted in the 25th Battalion. He returned to Australia in March of 1919 where he married Bertha Bradby and went on to have seven children: Roy, Maureen, Edward, Claire, Bernard, Michael and Valmae.

He once again enlisted in 1942 at the age of 48, joining the 15th Battalion, this time as a Lieutenant.

Ben was one of the founding members of the Mirani RSL, and president of the Mackay District RSL 1955 - 1956. He officially opened the RSL building in Mackay in 1955.
