Younger of the two siblings (Edward and Mabel) who served in WWII, Corporal Mable Ethel Nye (Service No:VF396276) enlisted in the Australian Womens' Army Service (AWAS) on 27 November 1942 as a Private - AWAS Training Depot and LHQ Records - graded Clerk. Corporal Nye was attached to 2 Echelon HQ AMF at Discharge on 29 November 1945.
Maisie was born in Sunshine, Victoria in 1918, fifth of six children of Edward Pilgrim Nye (b1877 in Baddaginnie, Victoria) and Mabel Warner (b1884 in Melbourne, Victoria). Edward worked as a Labourer in Baddaginnie, and was a Labourer in Pakenham in 1911 when he and Mabel married in Melbourne. Edward and Mabel settled in Sunshine, where they raised their family and Edward worked as a Labourer and Moulder.
Maise worked as a Mender (Yarra Falls Ltd) and was a member of the Sunshine Hockey Club before enlisting in the Army in 1942. Following her Discharge in 1945, Maisie returned to Melbourne, where in 1955 she married Edward (Bill) William Smith MiD (b1922 in Kyabram, Victoria) - Bill served in the AIF (Sergeant; Service Nos:V15562/VX139838), and was a Teacher in Mildura. Maisie and Bill lived in Mildura, Corryong, Pakenham and Rye, before settling in Narre Warren. Bill was a Teacher until retirement. Maisie died in 1993 and Bill died in 2010.
