From Woodford Academy - National Trust of Australia NSW
In January 1916 former Woodford Academy student William Herbert Ward, 'Bert' enlisted for the Great War just a couple of weeks before his 18th birthday. The legal age for enlistment was 21.
A Sydney University medical student, Bert's skills were no doubt highly valued for the war effort. This is perhaps why his youthful appearance was overlooked when he enlisted. His enlistment papers state he was 22!
