Younger of the two brothers (James and Alexander) who served in WWII, Private Alexander McLeish Ross (Service No:N6375) enlisted in the ACMF on 29 September 1941 with 21st Light Horse Regiment. Private Ross served with 20 Infantry Battalion, 5 Motor Regiment and 4 Australian Horse Transport Coy, and was a Sapper attached to 27 Employment Coy at Discharge on 19 April 1944.
Sandy was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1923, youngest of three children of James Roy Ross Snr (b1891 in Holbrook, New South Wales) and Florence Ethel McLeish (b1891 in Warren, New South Wales). James worked as an Overseer at Little Billabong via Holbrook before he and Florence married in Sydney in 1919. The couple settled at Noonbah via Holbrook, where they raised their family and James was a Grazier.
Sandy was working as a Grazier on the family property at Noonbah via Holbrook in 1941 when he enlisted in the Army. In 1952 in Albury he married Pauline Bowler (b1930 in Holbrook, New South Wales), and the couple settled at Noonbah, where they raised their family and Sandy was a Grazier - and was appointed Trustee/Trust Board Member of the Athletics and Sports Reserve in Holbrook, and the Holbrook District Race Club. Sandy died in 1995, and Pauline died in 2025.
