ALFRED JAMES NOALL was born on 15th March, 1892, at Brighton, Melbourne, Victoria, the son of Mr. A. J. Noall, Chairman of the Melbourne Stock Exchange, and Mrs. M. C. Noall. He was educated at the Brighton Grammar School, and entered the Bank’s service at Fitzroy on 5th June, 1910. He was transferred to the Flinders Street West Branch in October, 1911, and to Geelong, as ledger-keeper, a year later.

Alfred James Noall enlisted in February, 1915, as a member of the A.I.F. He left Australia on 26th August of the same year, arriving in Egypt on 27th September. He was sent to Gallipoli in October and was on active service there until the evacuation, after which he was on outpost duty in Sinai and Egypt until March, 1916. From there he went to France where he served with his battalion until wounded on 9th October, 1917, and sent to hospital. He returned to Australia on 22nd May, 1918, and received his discharge as he was found unfit for further military service.

Alfred James Noall received the following promotions:— Second-lieutenant, May, 1915; lieutenant, March, 1916; and captain, February, 1917.
