Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board
Lionel COLLINS, (Service Number 936) born in Bega in 1892, gave his ‘trade or calling’ as ‘labourer’ when he enlisted in the AIF in Sydney in August 1914. He worked for the NSW Government Railways.
He died in Heliopolis (Cairo) of measles and pneumonia on 29 March 1915. He was buried in the British Protestant Cemetery, Cairo.
The Southern Star, Bega, reported in April 1919 that ‘Several beautiful wreaths were hanging on the Bega Honour Roll yesterday…, and last week there were wreaths in memory of Private Lionel Collins, who was the first Bega district soldier to die overseas. War news brighter, and we’re not downhearted yet!’

Lionel COLLINS, (Service Number 936 was born in Bega in 1892. He gave his occupation as ‘labourer’ when he enlisted in the AIF in Sydney in August 1914. He worked for the NSW Giovernment Railways.
He embarked from Sydney in October 1914. He in Heliopolis (Cairo) of measles and pneumonia on 29th March 1915. He was buried in the British Protestant Cemetery, Cairo.
